Is there a correct way to decorate a Christmas tree?
I sure hope so, if not this blog post would be meaningless.
Setting up the Christmas tree
I’ve been decorating Christmas trees for years and I love it! I prefer artificial Christmas trees for many reasons, mainly because I’m allergic to the mold spores on live Christmas trees. If you prefer live Christmas trees that’s great! You can also follow most of my Christmas tree decorating steps.
First and foremost set up the tree, if possible set the tree up a few days in advance. This way the tree can air out before you start fluffing the branches. When fluffing the branches you will need to fluff every single branch and stem. I know it sounds tedious and it might be to some! Just put on some Christmas music grab a warm cozy drink and get to fluffing. You will be glad you didn’t skip this step in the end.
Another preference of mine are pre-light trees. If you do not have pre-lit tree, now is when you should add lights to your tree. Make sure you wrap every branch and stem for the best outcome.
Next add your topper! I know most Christmas and lifetime movies show us to add the topper at the end.
Nope! I’m not taking any chances, the topper goes on before the decorations. Before you add any ornaments verify that all your lights are working. Including the topper if the topper is a lit topper.

So everything is working correctly, Yay!
Let’s organize our picks, sprays and ornaments, ribbon, tinsel, and buffalo snow optional. Divide your ornaments by size and style of ornament. For example, if you have five medium reindeer you will place those five reindeers in your medium-sized ornament pile. Same goes for the picks and sprays.
Now that we are on the picks and sprays subject lets fluff the picks and sprays before placing them on the tree. Place the larger picks and sprays at the bottom section of the Christmas tree. The medium size picks and sprays in the middle section and the smaller picks and sprays on the top section. If you have only one size picks or sprays you can place them further into the tree towards the top section.

Time for the ribbon and tinsel
If using tinsel, ribbon, buffalo snow or all of the items mentioned you guessed it those go on now. Start with the buffalo snow, place fairly large chunks towards the center of the Christmas tree and smaller chunks towards the outer branches.
Follow with tinsel. Start at the top for a cascading effect, weave and loop the tinsel through the branches don’t just lay on top of the branches.
Here’s a good tip: When placing ribbon on your Christmas tree use shorter pieces of ribbon and nestle them within the branches. Shorter pieces give a more weaved in effect plus it’s much easier to nestle shorter pieces.
Alrighty we are now ready for the ornaments!

Woo-Hoo we are almost done…not really but we can already see a light at the end of this tunnel.
Finally the ornaments
Let’s begin with filler ornaments. Those would be the generic simple round ornament. These ornaments will reflect the light, you should only get a glimpse of them. Place larger filler ornaments towards the bottom and make your way up the tree from large to small. The smaller and medium filler ornaments can be placed all over the tree but keep large ornaments towards the bottom.
The part you’ve been waiting for is finally here!!!! Placing the show stopper ornaments, trinkets, flowers, etc. Place these ornaments in clusters for better viewing. Do you remember those five reindeer I spoke about earlier?
Great! I knew you were a good listener. Place those similar/exact trinkets within a proximity of each other. In the picture above you will notice angel wings placed near each other. Step formation is a great way to place these ornaments. The reason for this type of ornament placing if for the eye to gravitate and notice these special ornaments. When you scatter these ornaments to far apart the eye will most likely miss them.
Clustering is also a great way to for the eye to catch your favorite ornament.
Lastly the tree skirt
The last step is the tree skirt, basket, tub, wooden box, throw, or whatever fits your style. You can decorate under the tree if you like or keep it simple.
Plug your tree and Enjoy!
