The Bold and Beautiful, Kimberly Queen Fern (also known as Sword Fern due to the fronds being straight and narrow). These beauties are Australian natives that can resist a bit more heat and drought then most ferns can.
Kimberly Queen Ferns are low maintenance (that’s why I Love them) These ferns grow well in containers and planted in the ground. They are hardy on zones 9 -11, the Kimberly Queen fern doesn’t tolerate frosty temperatures. Outside of it’s zone you would need to treat this plant as an annual or move it indoors if grown in containers.
This tropical fern is an evergreen perennial in tropical and subtropical areas such as South Florida. She can tolerate full sun and medium sun. I personally have been successful with both. If planted in full sun you will need to water it more often then the one grown in medium sun. The soil should remain moist, water when the top 25% of soil is dry.
Splitting a Large Kimberly Queen Fern
The best time to split a fern is in the spring! When you are ready to split your Kimberly Queen fern remove the fern from its container and lay it on its side. I placed a large garbage bag on the ground to help me with clean up after the split.
In Pot / Out of Pot
Machete / Baby Fern
Split in half / Repotted/ Before and After
If you want to divide your fern more then half you can! I advise you visualize the cuts before making them. The process is very simple you will not hurt the plant. If anything you will encourage the ferns to grow more. Once divided, pot the ferns in adequate containers to it’s new size. Use nutrient-rich potting medium and water them. Keep the soil moist at this stage.
